X REED • The Ryan Anzures Duo selects tracks by Lou Reed for props.

The first time I heard Lou Reed, I knew that he made the songs that would be the soundtrack for my life. It's just one of those things you know...it goes beyond what can be explained by man, primal roots ingrained and coded. The feeling of raw energy it provoked and invoked spoke to me, much like the first time I heard Jimi or Jaco or Miles.

Born 68 years ago today, a pioneer and icon of modern day music, not only from his radical and inspirational work with The Velvet Underground, but also for his exceptional solo career and experiments in sonic music, pushing the boundaries of how music can be perceived.

I feel akin to Reed's sensibilities, both musically and mentally. His honesty is refreshing and beautiful. His lyrics are simple and straight forward, cutting to the truth; the smart and insightful comments he makes on a variety of topics from racial and social concerns to ramblings of insecurity to spirituality are that of an open nature of which I had never heard lyrically in music before.

I was used to hearing similies to the likeness of nature or human activities as the way someone would portray their feelings in songs. You can equate the way you feel about a girl to say...a fat kid's love of cake, or speak of one's sadness with crying doves, but to just say it bluntly and in your face was Reed's style.

Lou Reed is just one of those songwriters that has the balls and sophistication to bare themselves naked on a table to be examined by the public, not concerned about the perception they have of him, but of the perception he has of himself. That's what I get from his music anyway.

I feel its something you get from living in New York City. Being trapped in a small space with thousands of other people from all different walks of life creates some serious energy, the nexxus of the universe, and the coming together of modern human culture. At some point, you just have to not give a fuck or you get eaten up by it all.

I feel Lou knows and appreciates all the aspects of human life and culture from the shittiest, down and out, gut wrenching horror story to the beautifully blissful non-categorical storybook ending we all hope for...or at least I do anyway.

His music plays like a movie in my mind. He paints the scenes with his precisely chosen words placed in that unorthodox and off-putting key, sung in a pure and honest manner, bearing his soul for us to hear.

And he's got as much soul a white guy from Long Island can have; I'm kidding of course, but you know what I'm saying...

He's confronted his mind and has documented what he has learned, with surprisingly honest, almost comic, and beautifully composed music that should be respected not only for its genius but also for its genuine originality.

Lou Reed is surely a musical genius that has stood the test of time, doing it the way he wanted to and the world is that much better for it.

Thank You and Happy Birthday Mr. Reed.

—Ryan Anzures

There’s this feeling of promise over in the East Bay these days; an energy and a warmth that’s special to the people that call it home and to visitors not just from San Francisco, but from New York too (just ask Dave Chappelle and Mos Def). Oakland boasts a rich cultural history, especially with respect to music...and in particular soul, jazz and funk. Sly’s Family Stone and Herbie’s Headhunters gathered round the Tower of Power back in the day as Black Panthers and Hell’s Angels surveyed the land.

I can’t lie though...I wasn’t hip that way. As many lads growing up on the east coast, I learned about Oakland through its Athletic’s...but not through the legendary Reggie Jackson, who helped the A’s win three consecutive World Series titles in the early 70s, but through who Reggie called the “eyes and ears” of then A’s owner Charles Finley; a 13 year old kid named Stanley Burrell...or as Reggie nicknamed him “Hammer” because he looked like Hammerin’ Hank Aaron. MC Hammer got it started for me growing up...I remember learning about George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic through “Turn This Mutha Out” and wanted to board the Mothership to Oaktown...at 3, 5 and 7 O'clock...just like Sun Ra did in Space is the Place recruiting Oakland youth to go to outer space.

This episode of propsRadio takes you to inner space this last week of Black History Month through selections from the seminal jazz label Black Jazz. Founded in Oakland by jazz pianist Gene Russell in the early 70s, Black Jazz targeted Afrocentric awareness by providing a fresh alternative to the traditional jazz of the day, with music embodying the spiritual and the political...the soundtrack to the ubiquitous Black awakening throughout the civil rights period. Raise a fist then get kissed by the sun.
