SFNY Social Club / Mix by WAAJEED
Monday, September 12, 2011
True artists constantly jump at the chance at finding new ways to express themselves...and strive to do so in a way that is distinct to one’s own unique personality and background. It helps when you’re from a place in the states whose mythology is formed from equal parts music and machine...a magical combination where you can’t help but feel your mojo electrified...and say WOOP! to stake your claim, just like the cat I’m introducing here...a pied piper with a potential for platinum.
I’ve had the pleasure of building with Waajeed over laughs at Amateur Night at The Apollo, bbq not too far away in Harlem next door to the new Cotton Club, and just plain wylin' out on ideas…whether it be for music or graphics. In fact, Waajeed, known to many as just one of the D's greatest beatmakers, makes videos and does design too…as well as got a scholarship for what I studied in college. He's got an eye as good as his ear, which is something I strive for...all this done out of a modest apartment in Bed Stuy where his bedroom and studio are synonymous…which should hint to you as to how much this cat sleeps.
We're honored to have Jeedo a part of the SFNY Social Club and looking forward to the man blingin' out...at least 47 times. Don't sleep! - FA, SFNY Connect. Interview by Patrick King Most Diaz.
How does your musical sensibility fit into NYC and SF? How does it not?
I'm not sure if it does fit into the sensibility of NYC or SF. My aesthetic is Detroit all day.
Why did you move to NYC, and not to LA or SF?
When I made my choice I hated sunshine. It's a little different now… Just a little.
You've come from one of the most influential cities for music. What other cities or countries inspire and amaze you?
Well, Detroit is "The best" but I like LA and London. Both are progressive and uncompromising.
How much does the climate of Detroit and New York affect the life of musicians in those cities?
Very much. In Detroit, the focus is inward. There is a very small scene to support the music that is produced. In New York, it's the opposite. The scene and the affiliations seem to come first and the music is a by-product. Both are necessary.
Can you tell us about your upcoming projects in and outside of music?
Currently working on the biggest project of my career called ESO aka Electric Street Orchestra. Been developing it for the last couple years. Also been redeveloping bling47.com. It will feature lots of original video content and unreleased material from myself and others. They will both drop in February 2012.
The best kept musical secrets in Detroit and New York City?
Flame Brown and 303. You've been warned…
“Waajeed” means “finder” or “seeker” in Arabic.
