SFNY Social Club / Mix by SHRED ONE
Thursday, September 1, 2011
Frequent fly girl Shred One has been on our short list of deejays who we hoped would someday be able to spin at one of our metropolitan experiments. The stars happened to align this time around as she'll be coming back to one of the many cities she's called home just in time for SFNY Social Club.
She's an eclectic woman, not only in terms of the cities she has been brave enough to conquer, but also with regard to the genres of music she commands - the thump of New York-centric house, contrasted with lush but "ruff & tuff" California funk, complemented by the ache of deep Chicago soul. Being in tune with diversity is why she's a part of SFNY5. Shred One is not only a colleague but also that friend we'll call when we're looking for a bite to eat or need to hear a friendly voice from halfway across America. - Patrick King Most Diaz, SFNY Connect
I don't think I've ever met anybody that has lived in so many cities. Are you just running away from landlords at this point?
Only a few :) I grew up in one of the most suburban cities in LA county and have always been infatuated with city life. I took my first trip to NYC when I was 10 and promised myself that I would live there one day. There's things you learn that only living the city life can teach you, and I wanted to nourish those lessons in my life by moving to SF, and eventually Chicago.
LA, NYC, SF, and lastly Chicago - how have each of these cities influenced your deejaying? Do you adapt to each city in terms of musical trends or DJ style?
I started collecting records at a young age, so I've always been a selecta before a DJ. My journey living in different cities definitely influenced my growth and transition as a DJ. Living in NY, watching Rich Medina, Bobbito, and Stretch Armstrong, I learned the importance of selection. Growing up in LA, going to Beat Junkies parties and listening to their mix tapes, I learned the importance of developing your own personal style and extracting your own flava in your sets. Watching Shortkut, Apollo, and Teeko play in San Francisco really forced me to tighten up my technique and cleanliness, as well learn the art of rockin' the party. Now that I am in Chicago, being able to watch and dance to some of the DJs I've always respected and followed for years like Ron Trent, as well as inhaling the realness of the city, brings me back to the reason I started DJ’ing - to create the connection between music and the people.
If you could, what qualities from each city would combine into one mega-city?
The beauty in colors of San Francisco, the weather of LA, the diversity of New York, and the records of Chicago.
Why do you think people tend to gravitate mostly to either NYC or LA?
Both LA and NYC have always had the creative atmosphere that nourish and push its artists to thrive. There is tremendous support and respect in LA for the creative, and New York releases an energy that inspires people to hustle hard and make their dreams come true.
What are the best kept musical secrets in LA, SF, NYC, and Chicago?
Seek and ye shall find, my friends :)
